The Shelby County, Tennessee Register of Deeds has many free, digitized collections including Memphis Tennessee Provost Marshal Records 1861-1865.

“A Provost Marshal is an officer in the armed forces in charge of the military police. The office was created during the U.S. Civil War, 1861-1865, to enforce laws and maintain order. The following contains prisoners processed by the Union Army in Memphis.”
